When a KES 250,000 SEO Job Attracts Almost No Interest: A Wake-Up Call for Kenya’s Communication Industry

When a KES 250,000 SEO Job Attracts Almost No Interest: A Wake-Up Call for Kenya’s Communication Industry

By Hezron Ochiel

A few days ago, I received a message from a recruiter in Nairobi. The request sounded simple. The recruiter was seeking a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Manager to report to the Head of Digital Marketing.

The role offered a gross monthly salary of KES 250,000 (about $1,940 USD) and focused on leading technical SEO initiatives, driving organic growth, and working closely with product, technology, and brand teams.

The expectations were clear. The organization needed a professional with at least five years of SEO experience and a demonstrated ability to deliver measurable digital growth.

The recruiter asked whether I could recommend someone from my professional network.

I believed this would be an easy request to fulfill.

Over the years, I have built strong professional connections through my work in strategic communication and public relations. I shared the opportunity in three networks where I regularly engage with professionals.

First, I posted it in a WhatsApp group of the Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK), which includes roughly 1,000 public relations practitioners. I also shared the opportunity with my undergraduate alumni network, which has about 200 members, and my postgraduate alumni network, which includes around 500 professionals.

In total, the message reached approximately 1,700 individuals, many of whom are trained in or currently work within communication, media, and related industries.

The outcome surprised me.

Only three people expressed interest in the role. Out of those three, only one candidate had qualifications that came close to meeting the job requirements.

This experience highlighted an important lesson about the evolving communication industry. The challenge facing many professionals is not simply the availability of jobs. The deeper issue involves the skills required in the digital economy.

The Communication Industry Is Entering a New Phase

Communication professionals have traditionally focused on areas such as media relations, press releases, stakeholder engagement, and event publicity. These skills remain important in modern organizations. They support visibility and strengthen institutional reputation.

The communication environment has expanded significantly in recent years. Organizations increasingly depend on digital visibility and search-driven discovery to shape public perception.

Search engines have become the first point of contact between organizations and their audiences. Before interacting with an institution, stakeholders often search online for information.

Research published by Edelman in the Edelman Trust Barometer shows that online information plays a major role in shaping how people evaluate institutions. A large portion of stakeholders consult digital sources before forming opinions about organizations, brands, or public institutions.

This shift has elevated the importance of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as a strategic communication capability.

Understanding What SEO Means in Today’s Digital Environment

SEO is the process of improving the visibility of websites and digital content in search engine results. The practice involves structuring information in ways that allow search algorithms to understand, index, and prioritize content.

Modern SEO requires knowledge of several areas:

  • Technical website optimization.
  • Search engine indexing systems.
  • Content strategy and keyword structure.
  • Authority building through backlinks and digital credibility.

Search engines evaluate websites using complex algorithms that assess experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness, often referred to as E.E.A.T. Professionals who understand these signals help organizations structure credible content, strengthen authority, and improve discoverability in search results.

The digital landscape continues to evolve. In recent years, a new field has emerged alongside traditional SEO.

This discipline is known as Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).

GEO focuses on ensuring that information appears within responses generated by artificial intelligence systems such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Perplexity AI.

These platforms retrieve knowledge from structured and authoritative sources when generating answers. Organizations that organize their knowledge effectively become more likely to appear within AI-driven responses.

The development of GEO marks an important transition in the communication profession. Visibility now involves both search engines and artificial intelligence systems.

Why This Shift Matters for Communication Professionals

The communication profession now sits at the intersection of storytelling, technology, and data. Professionals who understand digital discovery can help institutions build credibility and influence online.

Industry research from LinkedIn consistently identifies digital marketing and SEO skills among the most in-demand competencies in the global job market.

Employers increasingly look for professionals who can connect a communication strategy with measurable digital outcomes.

This development creates a situation where organizations may offer attractive opportunities while struggling to identify qualified candidates.

The job opportunity I shared illustrates this situation clearly. The salary level and strategic nature of the role suggest that organizations value professionals who can guide their digital visibility strategies.

The limited response within professional networks indicates that the supply of advanced SEO expertise remains relatively small.

A Strategic Opportunity for Communication Professionals

The skills gap in digital communication presents a significant opportunity for professionals who adapt. Individuals who develop capabilities in SEO and digital visibility position themselves to move into strategic advisory roles.

These professionals guide organizations in answering key questions such as:

  • How can an institution become visible in search engines?
  • How should content be structured for discovery by algorithms?
  • How can organizations maintain credibility in AI-generated knowledge systems?

These questions shape the future of communication strategy.

The professionals who understand them help institutions navigate a complex information environment.

Building Authority in the Era of AI-Driven Discovery

My own work increasingly focuses on the intersection between communication strategy and digital discovery.

Through Hezron Insights, I examine how organizations build authority within modern information systems. My research explores how communication professionals can design content ecosystems that improve discoverability across search engines and AI platforms.

These themes form the foundation of my upcoming book, The Visibility Advantage: Building Authority That AI Recommends.

The book explores how organizations can structure knowledge in ways that allow algorithms and artificial intelligence systems to identify credible sources.

Authority in the digital environment emerges from structured knowledge, credible publishing, and consistent visibility.

Professionals who understand these principles become valuable advisors to organizations navigating the digital age.

The Lesson Behind the Job Post

The story of a job opportunity that attracted limited interest offers a valuable teaching moment.

It demonstrates that the communications industry is evolving toward a model in which digital visibility skills shape professional opportunities.

Communication professionals who invest time in learning SEO, data-driven communication strategies, and AI search systems will find themselves well-positioned in the market.

Those who understand how information flows across digital platforms will help organizations build influence, credibility, and public trust.

The future of communication will not be defined solely by who tells the most compelling stories.

The defining factor will be who ensures that those stories are discoverable in a world guided by search engines and artificial intelligence.
