However, the widespread and unregulated use of these platforms has raised concerns about the negative impact of excessive online activities on productivity as well as individuals’ lives.
Studies indicate that the average employee spends 12 percent of the working day using social media apps.
More than a decade ago, some employers restricted access to social media sites to prevent decreased productivity and potential publicity risks. While this strategy was partially effective due to limited smartphone access at the time, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to completely block employees from social platforms.

Gadget addiction is another issue that has emerged alongside increased technology use. Many people have become so attached to their phones that they take them to bed or feel anxious at the thought of losing them. To break free from the grip of addictive phone usage, consider implementing these six steps:

  1. Establish Boundaries – Leaders can set a positive example by refraining from posting work-related communications outside of business hours. This practice reduces the pressure on employees to stay connected around the clock, which in turn lowers the risk of burnout.
  2. Prioritize offline activities – Engage in hobbies, exercise, or socializing without your phone. By shifting your focus away from digital distractions, you can enhance your overall well-being and reconnect with the world around you.
  3. Disable non-essential notifications – Minimize interruptions by turning off unnecessary app notifications. This allows for a more intentional and less impulsive use of your phone, helping you stay focused on the task at hand.
  4. Create a tech-free wind-down routine – Establish a pre-bedtime routine that excludes screen time. This helps your mind unwind and promotes better sleep quality by reducing exposure to the stimulating effects of screens.
  5. Digital health breaks – Employers can play a role by encouraging employees to take breaks from technology. By connecting with people in real life and engaging in physical activities, employees can recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Establishing and implementing guidelines to manage technology usage can support this initiative.
  6. Seek support – If you find it challenging to reduce your phone usage on your own, don’t hesitate to seek support from friends, family, or professional counselors. They can offer encouragement and strategies to help you achieve a healthier relationship with your phone.
