Today marks one year since I launched my LinkedIn newsletter, Hezron’s Weekly Insights, which later evolved into the blog Hezron Insights.
It has been an amazing journey. With over 19,500 readers, my newsletter has become one of my proudest professional achievements. Through it, I’ve shared insights on personal branding, workplace resilience, leadership, empathy, and storytelling in public relations.
In this special edition, I’m reflecting on what worked, the opportunities this journey opened up, and why starting a newsletter or blog could be the game-changer your brand needs in 2025.
A Dream Rooted in Experience
My public relations career officially began in 2015 when I transitioned from journalism to PR. From the start, I dreamed of owning a personal blog — a space where I could share what I’ve learned, both professionally and personally.
I did try launching a blog years ago, but I wasn’t ready. The costs, the technical maintenance, and the time commitment overwhelmed me. After a few posts, I shut it down before it could reach its first anniversary.
But everything changed in 2022 when LinkedIn introduced its newsletter feature. It gave professionals like me a platform to write and grow without the logistical burden of managing a website. Fast forward to today, and this marks my 56th edition, and I’m still going strong.
Earlier this month, I attended a Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK) conference. To my surprise, several people in the audience said, “We know you—we read your content.” I was humbled. That moment reminded me how a simple digital platform can elevate your brand visibility and professional influence.
Now, every time I meet colleagues or friends, the first thing they ask is, “What’s coming up in your next issue?” That question keeps me on my toes and fuels my writing energy.
If you are serious about personal branding, I highly recommend starting a LinkedIn newsletter. This is not a paid promotion. It is a personal testimony. It worked for me, and it could work for you, too.
Why Starting a Newsletter or Blog Matters?
Here are seven compelling reasons why newsletters and blogs are essential for building your personal brand and standing out in the digital world.
- Keep You Consistently Visible
Newsletters and blogs give you a recurring touchpoint with your audience. Unlike social media posts, which can quickly disappear in feeds, newsletters land directly in inboxes, and blog posts remain searchable for years. This regular presence ensures your professional voice stays relevant and memorable.
- Provide a Direct Line to Your Followers
A newsletter is a direct communication channel. It bypasses unpredictable algorithms and puts your message right in front of your readers. Blogs do the same by serving as a content hub, a place your audience can return to anytime to find value, insight, and inspiration.
- Build Deeper Connections and Engagement
With regular posts, you build relationships rooted in value. Sharing relevant content, personal stories, or industry trends helps foster authentic engagement and builds trust with your audience over time.
- Improve Search Visibility (SEO)
A well-optimized blog can significantly enhance your search engine presence. By incorporating targeted keywords, answering audience questions, and offering actionable insights, your blog posts can rank higher in search results and drive organic traffic to your brand.
- Promote Thought Leadership
Newsletters and blogs are excellent platforms to demonstrate your expertise. Whether you are offering professional tips, discussing industry shifts, or analyzing case studies, these platforms help position you as a go-to authority in your niche.
- Nurture Long-Term Relationships
Unlike quick interactions on social media, newsletters and blogs build lasting relationships. They enable you to nurture a community, tell your story consistently, and create a sense of continuity in how your audience connects with your message.
- Offer Valuable Analytics
Both platforms provide rich data. From open rates and click-throughs to comment sections and bounce rates, these analytics give you the insight needed to refine your content, understand your audience, and make strategic improvements over time.
My Notable Wins from Blogging and Newsletter Publishing
Since launching my LinkedIn newsletter and blog, I have achieved several milestones that reflect the power of consistent content marketing and strategic digital visibility.
- Speaking Opportunities
The visibility generated through my blog and newsletter has led to invitations to speak at workshops, seminars, webinars, and podcasts. Notable appearances include facilitating sessions with Media for Environment, Science, Health, and Agriculture (MESHA) and leading a mentorship workshop at The Hush Tree.
- Building a Personal Brand
Writing regularly has significantly expanded my digital footprint. I have grown a professional presence that positions me as a credible voice in public relations, leadership, and storytelling.
- Networking and Collaboration
The blog has opened doors to meaningful collaborations with professionals, influencers, and thought leaders, both locally and across the continent. These relationships have enriched my personal and professional life.
- Audience Growth and Engagement
The growth of a loyal, engaged readership has been rewarding. Readers now share the content, respond with feedback, and even initiate topic suggestions. This level of engagement is every content creator’s dream.
- Increased Media Exposure
My writing has led to mentions and features in media outlets and PR circles. This enhanced credibility has created more trust and broader recognition across platforms.
- Skill Development
Blogging has sharpened my skills in digital communication, SEO, content creation, and social media marketing. These skills have become assets in both my career and consulting roles.
- Personalization and Relevance
The newsletter allows me to segment my audience and deliver tailored content that resonates with different groups. Personalizing communication based on feedback and analytics has increased relevance and reader satisfaction.
Final Thoughts
Starting a blog or newsletter is not just a content exercise. It is a branding strategy, a relationship builder, and a platform for professional expression.
As we move into 2025, newsletters and blogs will continue to define how we connect with audiences, build credibility, and stand out in crowded digital spaces. If you’re serious about personal branding, there is no better time to start than now.
I am grateful for the journey so far and excited about what lies ahead. Whether you’re a PR professional, a consultant, or someone with a story to tell, start writing, keep showing up, and let your voice shape your digital future.
