The profound impact of words on people’s self-esteem and well-being cannot be overstated. Positive words possess the extraordinary power to uplift and bolster confidence, while negative words can mercilessly crush one’s spirit.
Recently, a video titled “Hapa ni wapi” surfaced on the internet, shedding light on the hardships endured by students at the hands of their teachers. This viral clip showcases three Kenyan youths in military attire, sarcastically challenging their mathematics teacher’s earlier prediction that they would fail in life.
The sheer irony and cynicism in their statement, “Mwalimu wa maths ulisema siwezi enda mbali. Hapa ni wapi?” (My maths teacher told me I wouldn’t make it in life. Where am I now?), have triggered a flood of emotions on TikTok. Countless TikTokers have shared their mind-blowing encounters with their math teachers using the hashtag , unveiling the drama surrounding math teachers.
Initially, these amusing videos may seem like light-hearted entertainment, but beneath the surface, they expose a shocking reality that occurs behind classroom doors. Who would have anticipated that the very individuals tasked with nurturing students’ dreams would end up shattering their hopes? The irony is profound.
Consequently, numerous students graduate from school believing they are destined to fail in life. I witnessed the tragic consequences of such negative influence during my primary education, where at least five students dropped out due to repeated belittlement by a teacher who made them feel worthless and devoid of potential.
These hurtful words leave lasting scars on individuals, some of whom I spoke to years later, still carrying the emotional burden of that cruel judgment. As a result, they tragically decided to abandon their educational journey, convinced they were destined to fail.
Interestingly, out of the five students I talked to, three got married shortly after becoming teenagers, while the rest pursued vocational training and became skilled masons and welders, excelling in their careers.
Similar incidents occurred later in high school. The actions of one of our math teachers are etched in my memory. I can’t forget the moments when he would select a few high-performing students for extra coaching, leaving the rest behind, forgotten and ignored.
The words he uttered cut deep into our souls, making the affected students feel worthless and unwanted. How could he say, “Some of you will pull down our overall mean score”? The pain of exclusion and isolation was unbearable. Watching peers receive special attention while the rest are left on their own isn’t a very nice experience.
These days such exclusions happen everywhere including at home where some parents unknowingly crash the dreams of their kids.
Looking back, I wish our teacher had seen beyond the numbers and recognized the potential in each student. A little encouragement and belief in the abilities of learners would have made all the difference. No one should feel inferior because they learn at a different pace.
Amidst the accounts of dream-crushing teachers, it’s important to remember that not all educators fit that mold. There are exceptional teachers who shape the future, nurture dreams, and empower their students to reach for the stars.
We should learn from these painful memories and strive to create nurturing environments where every student and child has the opportunity to shine. Encouragement, support, and inclusivity can transform lives and shape futures. Let us be the ones who uplift others, rather than leave them behind, burdened by feelings of isolation and insignificance.
In conclusion, it is crucial to recognize the weighty impact our words can have on others. As educators, parents, and mentors, we bear the responsibility of nurturing and inspiring the next generation. Our words should serve as sources of encouragement, motivation, and support, instilling belief in students and empowering them to achieve greatness in their lives.
Let us endeavor to be dream-makers, not dream-breakers, fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and capable of realizing their full potential.
