Securing a decent job after graduation is the aspiration of every individual.

The transition from the academic journey to professional life is meant to be rewarding and fulfilling.

However, when job opportunities do not materialize as expected, a sense of desperation can set in.

My Quest for a Journalism Career

Upon graduating from college with aspirations of pursuing a career in journalism, specifically within a major media company in Kenya, I was met with the harsh reality of a stagnant job market.

Despite my efforts to secure an entry-level position as a correspondent or reporter, two years passed without any success.

Faced with the pressing need to support myself and pay bills, I turned to online writing jobs as a viable alternative.

Embracing Online Writing Opportunities

Enrolling on popular online job platforms like Upwork, Guru, Freelancer, and Fiverr, I embarked on a journey of freelancing.

Armed with a desktop computer and internet bundles, I secured my first gig – writing a 1000-word article analyzing the economic situation in Africa for a client who paid $50 per piece.

Despite the challenges, this venture allowed me to earn a sufficient income, showcasing the potential of online work to alleviate financial struggles.

Addressing Unemployment Rates in Kenya

Against the backdrop of an alarming unemployment rate in Kenya, particularly among the youth, online work emerges as a potential avenue to alleviate poverty.

With the overall unemployment rate standing at 12.7 percent and youth unemployment soaring at 67 percent, embracing online opportunities may offer a lifeline for many struggling individuals.

Overcoming Challenges and Building Skills

While the income from online work was substantial, challenges like high transaction costs for PayPal withdrawals presented hurdles.

Despite these obstacles, I persevered, recognizing this phase as an opportunity to build skills and enhance my chances of securing a permanent job in the future.

After proving my capabilities to write, I was offered a stringer position.

This opportunity paved the way for my career growth, leading to my current role as Deputy Head of Corporate Communications.

Despite my initial passion for the film industry, venturing into writing allowed me to discover a talent and passion I hadn’t fully recognized. Building and nurturing relationships with friends, colleagues, and mentors is pivotal in securing job opportunities. My experience with the friend, who recommended me for a writing gig, highlights the importance of maintaining strong connections. A supportive network of friends can provide continuous encouragement during challenging times. Sharing your aspirations and struggles with those who uplift and motivate you creates a positive environment.
